Second Coming

The Lion of Judah

The Messiah will return to judge, destroy His enemies, and rule from Jerusalem. The OT points to this coming King from the tribe of Judah.

Key verses

  • Genesis 49:10
The scepter shall not depart from Judah … until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
  • Zechariah 14:9
The LORD will be king over all the earth. On that day the LORD will be one and his name one.
  • Isaiah 2:3
Out of Zion shall go the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

He Is Coming Again

The same Scriptures that foretold the suffering Servant also foretell the conquering King. Jesus came first as the Lamb; He will return as the Lion of Judah (Revelation 5:5).

From Judah: ruler and judge

Genesis 49:10 — The scepter will not depart from Judah until Shiloh (the one to whom it belongs) comes; to Him shall be the obedience of the peoples. Numbers 24:17 — A star shall come out of Jacob, a scepter out of Israel, that shall crush the forehead of Moab. These point to a future Ruler from Judah—Jesus, the Lion of Judah.

The day of the LORD

The prophets describe the day when the LORD will judge the nations, destroy His enemies, and establish His kingdom on earth. Zechariah 14 — His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives; the LORD will be king over all the earth. Isaiah 2; Micah 4 — The word of the LORD will go out from Jerusalem; nations will stream to it.

Ruling from Jerusalem

Jesus will return in glory (Matthew 24:30; Revelation 19:11–16), judge the living and the dead, and reign from Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:3; Zechariah 14:9; Revelation 21–22). He will set all things right—the hope of Israel and the nations.
